Employment history

Your employment history shouldn’t simply list who you’ve worked for in the past. There are certain ways it should be presented and information you have to include.

Your employment history must:

  • Be in reserve chronological order with your most recent employment at the top
  • Include the name of the employers, the positions held, and the amount of time you were there
  • Include duties and achievements
  • Be concise and relevant

Tip 1: Include your achievements as well as your responsibilities

The most effective employment history will be achievement focussed, while describing the key duties that match the role they are applying for. Although it’s tempting to only list your responsibilities, it’s your achievements that will set you apart from the rest. When you’re writing your employment history, take the time to evaluate your career and your successes. Maybe you implemented a change for the better or your creativity helped to solve a problem? Be sure to include these in your employment history.

Remember, use words like led, achieved, successfully, increased.

When listing your duties try and make them relevant to the role you are applying for. If they are not, try to include the skills you’ve gained from previous positions and how these transfer to the role you are interested in.

Tip 2: Be concise

Remember, an employer takes 20 to 30 seconds to look at your whole CV, so it’s important that you don’t waffle. Introducing each point with a bullet point will help you to structure the information and make it clear for the employer to read. Try to limit the duties and achievements to 3 per employer; however it’s ok to include more for the most recent employers and less for the oldest ones.
